Young
Galaxy is the creative confluence of kindred spirits, Stephen
Ramsay (vocals/guitar) and Catherine McCandless (keyboards/vocals).
They formed in Vancouver and moved to Montreal to record with
Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes) at his Breakglass Studio in the summer
of 2005 and spring of 2006. Their sound is kaleidoscopic, with
heavy tones and hypnotic male/female vocals. The self-titled
debut album also features collaborations from The Dears, Besnard
Lakes, Stars, Patrick Watson, A Silver Mount Zion and other
dear friends. Like their namesake, Young Galaxy has borne something
concrete of something abstract and ephemeral.
"When we sat down to make the record, we wanted to marry
the grand cosmic sound of Spiritualized with the emotional resonance
of Fleetwood Mac." – Stephen Ramsay
Young Galaxy recently navigated their way through the West Coast
of the U.S. in support of The Dears. This marked the band's
first tour together. The full length album will be released
on April 24, 2007, and more tour dates are forthcoming.
"SWING YOUR HEARTACHE" EP NOW AVAILABLE: Pitchfork
Media described Young Galaxy's "Swing Your Heartache"
as "gorgeous, cosmic and spiritual." This song, along
with "The Sun's Coming Up, My Plane's Going Down"
and "Golden Coin" are currently available only on
the Young Galaxy "Swing Your Heartache" EP.
"A lovely bit of celestial pop featuring sweet boy/girl
harmonies that serves as a splendid introduction to an act."
– eye Weekly
"We tried to choose songs that represent the album's range
of feeling and sound – the relationship of hights to lows,
the bittersweet, the hearts of contradiction. The third song
is "The Golden Coin," a song written and recorded
during a 2003 Vancouver-based recording session where we began
trying to find our way into our call. It means a great deal
to us that you have heard it. We hope you enjoy our first efforts
at extending the call to you." – Young Galaxy
